Confirmation of British Nationality Status

Avoid Common Mistakes

Our free comprehensive e-guide highlights the five most common mistakes applicants make and offers tips on how to avoid them.

What does this service cover?

If you have recently been awarded British Citizenship or were born with it, you may find a time at which you need a letter to confirm your British Nationality status. The status, otherwise known as Form NS, provides official written confirmation that can be used in a range of situations, including the following:

  • Applying for scholar funding, state benefits, or government incentives
  • To applications processes such as for jobs or study
  • For use in legal cases such as applying for a mortgage or opening a business
  • To support the immigration status or application of related family members

If you have been successfully awarded British Citizenship, you are entitled to a legal document supporting any of these needs. Our services can help you obtain your confirmation in a timely manner which suits your application reasons.

What are the eligible types of British Citizenship?

A confirmation of British Citizenship can be obtained by anyone who holds any of the below statuses for immigration purposes. You may assume that applying for this type of confirmation is only needed for people who don’t hold a British birth certificate, but that is incorrect. In certain situations, even those born with British Citizenship may need this letter of confirmation. Whether you need to travel overseas or require documentation to support a UK-based process, My Immigration Services are on hand to help you.

You will be approved for a confirmation of your status if you need any of the below criteria:

  • If you are a British Citizen – This can be either from birth or if you have successfully been awarded British Citizenship via an immigration application. The reason does not matter if you are a qualifying applicant.
  • If you are a British person currently in overseas territories – There are 14 British overseas territories of which the citizens are eligible for this confirmation. Whilst each has its own constitution and parliament; they are still overarchingly managed by the UK. This automatic link was only made legal back in 2002, so there are several residents before this time who may not have the suitable paperwork to confirm their citizenship status.
  • Suppose you are a British-born person who is living anywhere overseas. In that case, As long as you have retained your British Citizenship when visiting other countries, you are eligible to apply for this confirmation. If you become an approved citizen of another country, you will still technically be eligible due to your place of birth, but the process does become slightly more complex. We thrive in these difficult situations, so there is no need to worry about this.
  • If you are a British-protected person – The term ‘British protected person’ (BPP) appeared originally in the 1800s from the British government. This relates to:
  • a citizen or national of Brunei under any law providing for Citizenship or nationality in force in Brunei
  • a person who immediately (before 1 January 1983) was a British Protected Person by virtue of the 1978 Order
  • a person otherwise stateless can become a British-protected person
  • government officials and members of the royal family

How do I apply?

As with any form of visa or citizenship application, the first hurdle you must cross is ensuring you are eligible by having all the correct documents in one place. Our team make this simple by giving you a clear list of what is needed. If you look online, you will see endless blog posts and articles about the best way to apply, but our own services are accredited by the Immigration Advice Authority (IAA) meaning we can offer you the most up to date advice on how to create your application. Documents that you will need to provide are:

  • Proof of your existing British citizenship which can either by your certificate of being awarded the status or your birth certificate or you were born in the UK.
  • Proof of your identity in photo form (driving licence, passport etc.)
  • Proof of your current location and residence in the UK (household bills etc.)
  • Confirmation from a witness that your application is honest and correct.

These requests also offer no right to appeal, so it is imperative that the information is successfully collated before you submit anything.
